News this week

Quite a lot has been happening this week.
Unfortanely the first thing was bad. Evolution, the club where we were going to hold MTJR Live and Unleashed closed down two days before the event was meant to happen. All because one of the owners decided to go without telling anyone, and take everything away and close it down. I was obviously annoyed because I had everything ready for Friday, and also it was going to be mine and Mike's wedding reception venue. Not only that, but it was the only place I've liked going out to lately, as I'm very fussy, and the nights there were good. It was only just starting to get succesful under the new management. In any case, it can't be helped and I wish the best of luck to Stacey, the manager to find something new. Hopefully we will find something as well.

The rest is good, I promise!
My friend Ruth has just been accepted as a new dj on MTJR. I can't wait for her to start, I will no longer be the only female dj on the station :)

The Top 500 date has finally been decided. The weekend of 13/14th June will be dedicated to it, so no pigtails or new music that week, but I will be taking part in the top 500! There are some real suprises in there, as well as the classics you might expect.

Finally, I'm doing my third public dj set as part of the Southend Fringe Festivals-
Vaudeville and Silent disco! it's taking place at the Kursaal in Southend on the 11th June from 8pm there will be various entertainment including tap dancing, a band and other acts. Then from 10pm will be a Silent Disco! I've never been to one let alone djed at one, but for those who don't know, people get headphones, and there is more than one dj so you can choose what to listen to. So far there will be myself and my friend Emma (who incidentally is the organiser of southend fringe) djing and I think there might be a third dj. Should be a fun night!

It's not fair :(

I get regular emails from The Donnas  mailing list and earlier this week I got an email from it telling me they are touring with LEGENDS- Blondie  and Pat Benatar!

If Joan Jett was playing as well, I would have said that's almost perfect! However, the tour is in the U.S- damn! I thought it was bad enough they've got No Doubt's reunion tour (with Paramore and The Sounds supporting) but this is like torture! Amercians reading this, please go and take lots of photos so I can cry at the awesomeness and see it was actually real lol.

It's for The Donnas Greatest Hits tour, if you're lucky enough to be in the U.S you can see the dates here

NWOFDA

I've noticed that so far this year, an emergence of a lot of female alternative dance artists, so I am naming this trend NWOFDA (New Wave Of Female Dance Artists)!
No I am not talking about women like Lady Gaga...I'm talking electro/punk/dance/funky in particular the artists that I would say fit into this new wave are: Santigold (formely Santogold after a jewellery firm of the same name threatened legal action- surely you wouldn't mind your company name being linked with such good music)? , Ladyhawke and Little Boots.

Santigold has punk roots, as she was a singer for a punk rock band called Stiffed before going solo and bringing out the punk/rock/electro fusion music she does now. Her song "Say Aha" was used in a car advert, which is where I first heard her.

Ladyhawke, (Phillipa Brown) was also in a punk band when she was younger interesting enough, called Two Lane Blacktop. She then joined another band called Teenager that had a song featured in a video game (Grand Theft Auto IV) before leaving the band to pursue her solo project, her alter ego "Ladyhawke". She then had Peaches remix her single "Paris is Burning" .
I particularly like "From Dusk Till Dawn"

The newest artist in the NWOFDA is Little Boots, (Victoria Hesketh) who was voted BBC Sound of 2009. What makes her unique is her variety of influences that go for Kylie Minogue to Kate Bush. She had been in school orchestras and a prog band, and even did a Pop Idol audition (but didn't get to the cameras or the judges) She was also in the band Dead Disco for a while. A member of Hot Chip produced her first solo song "Stuck on Repeat" and the buzz soon followed.

An interesting chapter in female music, will be interesting to see how it evolves next....

Rounds @ Chinnerys Saturday 2nd May

Ok I will admit straight away that I may have a slight bias towards this band, as one of my very good friends is in it. Saying that, anothe rof my good friends is in a death metal band, and I'm ashamed to say I can't even think of listening to it, as I am no fan of that genre. Anyway, I digress.

Rounds were originally a five piece, then they lost some members and became "An Ideal For Living" Now they are a five piece again (one new member, 4 original members) and made their comeback last night at local venue Chinnerys.

There were a few techincal hiccups (the strings broke on one of their guitars) but this didn't hinder the sound at all. They seemed to whizz through a blinding set, mixing new tracks that I hadn't heard before, which had a new heavier sound, and played some of their older songs that had been reworked, it all sounded great. They ended with classic and favourite of mine "Party on the Beach" which is a debut single waiting to happen.

For those who haven't had the pleasure, Rounds are like something you have never heard before, they combine rock, indie, and electro with Muse/Radiohead- esque vocals. You can download their album via their MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/rounds1234

some live videos for you I found on YouTube..(but check out the myspace for good quality sound)!
